Self-Help from the Middle Ages – What the Seven Deadly Sins Can Teach Us About Living by PETER JONES
What can a twelfth-century monk teach us about burnout, envy, or despair?
In Self-Help from the Middle Ages, historian Peter Jones uncovers a forgotten psychology. Medieval thinkers treated the Seven Deadly Sins not simply as vices but as a map of the human mind—a guide to understanding emotion, behaviour, and how to live well.
Drawing on poetry, confession manuals, paintings, and manuscripts, Jones reveals how medieval writers explored problems we still recognise today: rage, addiction, narcissism, grief, and anxiety. He will be talking about his new book with Simon Kinder, Head of History at Gresham’s
“A unique and delightful book… I can think of nothing else quite like it.”
— Nicholas Vincent
“A thoughtful exploration of medieval ideas—and how they illuminate modern life.”
— Peter Frankopan
“One of the most compelling medieval history books I have ever read.”
— Ian Mortimer
Peter Jones, who earned his PhD in Medieval History from NYU, has taught at the University of Toronto, UCL, and the Complutense University of Madrid. His work will also be featured as Radio 4’s Book of the Week, and he will appear at major festivals including Hay, Charleston, and Chalke. As well as coming to Holt.
